What is a Red Team and What is Its Purpose?

Emerging from adopting the mindset and model of attackers, the red team concept has arisen to strengthen cybersecurity defense mechanisms. Its goal is to prevent potential attacks that could be organized against companies or organizations, and to identify security vulnerabilities in advance to prevent these attacks with minimal damage. The consistent and planned execution of the red team, which is a globally used system, is important. Red teaming, which detects logic errors and vulnerabilities in system penetration testing, consists of security tests performed to prevent security gaps from being exploited and misused by malicious actors and to make these systems more secure. The main objective is not just to detect a vulnerability, but to reach the relevant vulnerability without damaging the system and to gain authorized access.

Red Teaming Stages

Red teaming services consist of six stages. These stages are:

  • Reconnaissance
  • Weaponization
  • Delivery
  • Exploitation
  • Command and Control
  • Actions on Objectives.

Difference Between Red Team and Penetration Testing

Although they share some commonalities, red teaming and penetration testing actually differ in terms of approach and desired outcomes. Penetration tests alone cannot provide an effective and comprehensive security analysis. During penetration tests, the entire information technology team is aware of the tests, and the tests are carried out in a controlled manner. However, the situation is different in red teaming; only one or two managers are aware of the operation to be carried out. The prepared operation is carried out secretly and without the knowledge of other team members. The goal of the red team is not only to test the environment and the systems within it, but also to test your employees. It comprehensively simulates global attacks in terms of techniques and tactics.
